What's Moving Now
August 2026
The 2026 memory supercycle is the dominant story. DRAM contract prices rose roughly 90% quarter-on-quarter in Q1 2026, according to TrendForce, driven by HBM demand for AI training clusters and a supply base still cautious after 2023's downturn. It shows up in the trade data too: Korea's memory-chip export bill (HS 854232) hit $94.6B in 2025, up 121% from the 2023 crash trough of $42.9B. Analog and power chipmakers including TI, Infineon and NXP have pushed through price increases of 15-85% across select catalogue parts, citing tight wafer capacity and rising input costs.
For India, the import bill is climbing sharply. Annual IC imports (HS 8542) grew from around $1B in 2010 to $29B in 2025 as smartphone assembly, automotive electronics and server buildouts pulled in more silicon. Meanwhile, the duty stack on wafers and photoresists adds a meaningful landed-cost premium over the tariff-free IC imports they feed into.

The single most-tracked semiconductor metric. DRAM $/GB has fallen over six orders of magnitude since the 1970s, but cyclical supercycles regularly double spot prices within a year.

NAND flash price history: US$ per GB since 2010
NAND flash follows a similar long-term decline, driven by 3D layer stacking and node shrinks. Supply constraints and data-centre buildouts can push prices up sharply.

Discretes & Power
US discrete semiconductor price index (PPI) since 2005
Unlike ICs, discrete and power semiconductors face rising prices as the SiC and GaN transitions tighten supply while EV and renewable-energy demand grows.

Import Duty on Semiconductor Inputs (India)
India's tariff structure creates a split: finished ICs (HS 8542) and semiconductor manufacturing equipment (HS 8486) enter duty-free, while raw materials like wafers, photoresists and specialty chemicals carry BCD + SWS + IGST. The effective landed-cost premium on inputs matters for new fabs and OSAT plants trying to compete with tariff-free zones elsewhere in Asia.

Methodology & Licensing
Index vs. price. A producer price index (PPI) measures the average change over time in selling prices received by domestic producers. It is not a dollar price. A falling PPI for ICs means US chipmakers are receiving less per unit of output, which typically reflects more capability per dollar rather than a collapsing market. Import unit values (Comtrade) divide total trade value by quantity; they are noisy averages affected by mix shifts, not spot prices for a specific part.
