General electroplating capability is widespread in India. Semiconductor-grade process control and effluent handling are not.
What Breaks, and Who Could Fix It
The effluent is the hard part. A semiconductor plating line generates regulated metal-bearing wastewater, and the treatment plant is often a larger permitting exercise than the plating line itself.
An Indian plating specialist with existing effluent infrastructure is a genuinely plausible qualified supplier within 12 to 18 months.
Best and worst case
Plating lines are standard electroplating engineering, and India has a large plating industry to draw skills from.
Tin whiskers, spontaneous conductive filaments growing from a pure tin finish, remain a live reliability risk that plating chemistry choice directly controls.
One of the strongest MSME positions in the back end. Plating chemistry has its own entry; the trim-and-form tooling is precision tool-room work.
Environmental compliance is the gate, not the chemistry. Underestimate the consent-to-operate timeline and the whole plan slips.

Every entry carries the same five figures, so two inputs anywhere in the chain can be compared directly. What each one is, and what it is not:

- What it would plausibly cost an Indian MSME to enter this input at the smallest viable scale, in crore rupees. Plant and equipment only; it excludes working capital and the qualification cycle.
- Time to qualify
- How long from a working sample to a qualified first shipment, once the line exists. Qualification, not construction, is what usually decides whether an entry succeeds.
- India readiness tier
- Our verdict on whether an Indian founder can realistically enter this input, derived from the four figures above and stated as one of three tiers.
The three tiers
